In 2012, the BGA initiated the Import Promotion Desk (IPD) and has been implementing it together with sequa gGmbH ever since. This project is supported by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
The approach of the IPD is based on the assumption that trade generates economic growth. The IPD opens up access to the German and European markets for small and medium-sized businesses from selected development and emerging countries and supports local organizations in the development of trade capacities, concentrating on the priority sectors of fruit and vegetables, natural ingredients, cut flowers, technical wood, and sustainable tourism. Yet, the crucial factor is the orientation at the demand of the German import trade to make sure that production matches the market needs.
The IPD assumes a pivotal function, linking the SME in the partner countries Egypt, Ethiopia, Ecuador, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Indonesia, Kyrgyzstan, Colombia, Nepal, Peru, Sri Lanka and Tunisia with the European import trade. In close cooperation with BGA member associations such as the German Fruit Trade Association, the German Timber Trade Federation, the Association of the German Flower Wholesale and Import Trade, and the Waren-Verein of the Hamburg Stock Exchange, the IPD establishes contacts between exporters and European companies and supports the development of long-term business relations, integrating companies in the partner countries in global trade and fomenting sustainable economic development in these countries.
